Summitpost.org Picture Gallery
June 16th, 2007 — Photography
I found this website, www.summitpost.org that is a networking site for people who go like to play outside.
I made a picture gallery there here.
Its kind of nice because I know people are looking at these pictures and hopefully enjoying them. There are a lot of amazing pictures other people have taken from all over the world as well.
Back From Spring Break
March 19th, 2007 — Photography, Travel
Got back into town Friday evening and have spent the weekend adjusting to being back. It has been warm in Bozeman, about 65-70F for the weekend. Most of the snow that was on the ground before Spring Break has melted. Its pretty spring-like here although I’m not getting my spring pants on just yet because I expect more snow.
There are some pictures on my Plogger gallery from the trip. Here’s the direct link to the new ones
Spring Break Pictures
The pictures from Zion have some captions located above the picture. None of the other’s do yet. I had done a bunch but I refreshed the page and they all went away.
Also, when you first come to a picture, you can click on it to get a bigger, nicer one. And depending on what browser you’re using, another click might make it even bigger! whoa!
It was an awesome trip. I’ll update more in a little while. Right now I’m back at school and there are some things I need to attend to.
On “Retouching” Photos
January 24th, 2007 — Photography, Politics
Editing pictures certainly seems to have come up a lot recently. I have a few things to say.
- Technically, if you want to know the truth, most of my photos are “retouched”. Picasa by Google has a button called “I’m feeling lucky” that does some good things to colors and contrast and I usually will hit this before I post a picture.
- What is a picture anyways? Its certainly not “reality”. I mean we don’t even ever experience technical reality. Our eyes and all their complicated mechanisms and our brain always process “reality” before we are able to perceive it.
- Since a picture is not “reality”, but rather something close, at what gradation of “closeness” does it actually cease to respresent what we would consider “reality”?
- If I take a picture does it make it any less realistic if I tweak a few things? How about if I change a lot of things?
When I get some time I’ll post some side-by-side images of before and after to give you a better idea of what I’m talking about.
On a separate note, I saw a good talk last night by Robert Jensen, professor of journalism at the University of Texas, Austin on white privledge and institutionalized racism. I particularly enjoyed him saying
“George Bush is the poster child for unearned white privledge in America”
The great thing about that quote is that it is true wholly separate of his policy, so it’s something everyone can agree on! Yeah!
Allright, now I have to finish getting ready to teach in 35 minutes.
