Symes Hot Springs

Apr 11th 2010 — Montana — 2:24 pm

For Hilary’s birthday our destination was Symes Hot Springs in Hot Springs, Montana, population 531. We had originally planned to go biking in Yellowstone but poor weather forced us to reschedule at the last minute. We decided to try something new.

We originally booked a room in the actual hotel itself, but were called the following day and told a mistake had been made, our room was double booked, and we were moved to what they said was a cabin outside the hotel.

Hot Springs Montana is not a town that is awash in capital. And Symes seems to be its economic centerpiece. The reasons why our visit to Symes ended up being akin to a weekend spent in a trailer park are too lengthy to discuss here. I will say that there is a low probability we will ever return.

  1. Best birthday tribute ever! There’s no exaggeration here – in fact, those pictures make things look rosier than they actually were.

  2. Hilly!

    Wow. OMG. Wow. OMG. Wow.

I’m speechless…..You poor thing…I can imagine Michael was pretty upset too…did the ‘management’ ever do anything for you? $90 A NIGHT ???????? Any recourse?

I hope there was a lot of wine in the cooler…:)

Better birthdays are ahead of you! 🙂

  3. What a dismal, dismal place! Memorable for sure. I guess their website doesn’t have a place for comments and recommendations!

75 days later we will re-celebrate and do it right!!

  4. Um, Elaine’s comment pretty much sums it up. Hilary you are a trooper to pose for those pictures! Well, hopefully y’all will be laughing about this for years to come?!?

  5. Thanks everyone for the sympathy. It was truly an unforgettable experience!

I honestly have never been happier to leave a place in my life. I think if we had stayed in the main building things would have been borderline ok, but the shanty they rented out under the guise of a cabin was abyssmal.

  7. I think you need to try Baden Baden next. . .the Germans know how to do hot springs the right way!

I also think you have material here for a fantastic sit-com episode, maybe even enough for a whole movie!

  8. Davy- Negative, we were going to go to Norris Hot Springs, which I have been to many times and is very pleasant.

Janet-Those are some excellent suggestions! I was thinking that Hot Springs Montana would be a good place to do a zombie movie.

  9. Well maybe if you don’t have to stay there while filming the movie!
