They sat out a four-day storm in their bat tent and then moved on very slowly - a hundred feet a day - up the Dihedral. On 11 November the Park Service decided they needed rescuing, which they did not. Ropes were actually lowered over the rim but were removed again after much shouting back and forth. Harding recounted what the outcome might have been if the rescuers had arrived:
' "Good evening! What can we do for you?" '
' "We've come to rescue you!" '
' "Really? Come now, get hold of yourselves - have some wine" '
